Most of us have PAN Card, It is issued by income Tax Department, it is used for bank deposits above Rs. 50,000/=, purchase and sale of immovable properties, vehicles etc.

It is a 10 character alphanumeric identifier. Each char says something about them, lets listen what they are going to say..:-p

Lets take a sample PAN Number AAAPL1234C

AAAPL-1234-C

First five characters are always Alphabets

AAAPL-1234-C

Next four are always numerals

AAAPL-1234-C

Last Char is always alpha check digit

I am the PAN Number

We are first 3 character, we range from AAA to ZZZ

Me the fourth character, will inform about type of holder of the card. Various types of holders are:

A — Association of Persons (AOP)

Me the 5th character represents

  • the surname or last name of the person, in the case of a “Personal” PAN card, where the fourth character is “P” or
  • (b) of the name of the Entity, Trust, society, or organisation in the case of Company/ HUF/ Firm/ AOP/ BOI/ Local Authority/ Artificial Jurdical Person/ Govt, where the fourth character is “C”,”H”,”F”,”A”,”T”,”B”,”L”,”J”,”G”.
